Sounds from the bottom of the ocean. A burnt out majestry and glory clings to these tracks, most run through layers of radio statics and lost voices, with a brace of musicians weighing in without overtaking the project. The lamento of Vitula is driven by a swoon of violins. A heartbreaking duet of voices and violins closes proceedings in a lost Americana moment. It was released four years ago, but right now it’s my record of the year.
